Chinese architecture studio Neri&Hu has designed a storefront for Swiss watchmaker and jeweller Piaget in Hong Kong, working with handmade ceramic tiles that reference the heritage of both equally the brand and the web-site.
The bespoke ceramic tiles, glazed in nuanced shades of deep blue and framed in bronze, have been neatly organized on the storefront of the new boutique where they form a relaxed addition to the current facade.
“The job celebrates the storefront as a jeweled city monument and repurposes the industrial facade to deliver a new monumental presence and civic potency,” Neri&Hu stated.
In accordance to the Shanghai-primarily based studio, the facade design and style, which was included to the existing making, was educated by Piaget’s devotion to craftsmanship and innovation as nicely as the background of the web page.
Situated in the historic wharf region of Kowloon on Canton Street, the making is in the very same district as the former Canton railway that related Hong Kong to mainland China, ahead of its decommission in 2007.
As a cultural and trade hub at the time, it has now developed to develop into the luxury procuring destination in Hong Kong.
The bronze lining nods to the site’s industrial past as a trading hub for commodities passing by means of the Canton railway and the Kowloon wharf.
The ceramic tiles were built in Jingdezhen, a metropolis in central China recognized for its tradition of ceramic craftsmanship. By applying this material, Neri&Hu supposed to highlight the site’s importance for cultural exchange as effectively as Piaget’s watchmaking heritage and crafts.
“We referenced the heritage of the brand by developing bronze specifics of craftsmanship, and also rejoice the tradition of China as a leader in ceramic manufacturing,” the studio discussed.
Somewhere else in China, Neri&Hu has extra an extension to the Qujiang Museum of Fantastic Arts in Xi’an and inserted a stainless-metal shed into an aged lane home for Blue Bottle Coffee’s latest cafe in Shanghai.
